Recco Technology
The RECCO technology enables search and rescue professionals to locate you in the event of an avalanche or if you find yourself lost in the wild. When you're equipped with RECCO reflectors, rescues teams can find you using RECCO detectors. This tech works in two parts: the detector emits a directional radar signal similar to a flashlight beam. Once the signal hits the RECCO reflector, it bounces back, guiding the rescuer right to you.
First rolled out in 1983, RECCO detectors are now the industry standard for avalanche rescues, utilized by rescuers in over 800 ski resorts and search and rescue teams across 27 countries. The new RECCO SAR helicopter detector scans vast areas quickly for missing individuals outdoors. It's in action at various locations in the Alps, North America, and Scandinavia, with plans to expand its reach globally (see recco.com for the latest coverage info on the RECCO system).
The RECCO reflector is a tiny, band-aid-sized, passive electronic transponder weighing under four grams. Factory-mounted to your gear and clothing, it’s designed to stay attached during an avalanche or accident, which means you won’t forget it in the car or at home. It’s power-free, needing no batteries, and works endlessly without any maintenance.
Created by Mahnus Granhed in partnership with Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology, the RECCO technology came to life after his avalanche experience in the 1970s. From its inception with the first working detector, it has proven indispensable in avalanche rescues and gained international adoption by ski areas and search and rescue teams as a vital tool. Remember, though, that RECCO tech is just part of a larger safety strategy in avalanche conditions.
