Recco Technology

RECCO technology allows professional rescuers to locate you in case of an avalanche or if you’re lost outdoors. By wearing gear with RECCO reflectors, rescuers can use detectors to find you. This two-part system sends out a radar signal, much like a flashlight beam. When the signal hits a RECCO reflector, it bounces back, guiding rescuers to you.

Initially introduced in 1983, RECCO handheld detectors are a standard tool for mountain rescuers around the world and are used at over 800 ski resorts and rescue organizations in 27 countries. The newly developed RECCO SAR helicopter detector quickly scans large areas for missing persons outdoors, currently operational in several locations including the Alps, North America, and Scandinavia, with plans to expand globally. Permanently attached to your gear, it’s designed to not get lost during an accident, ensuring you don’t leave it behind. It’s non-powered, which means there’s no need to turn it on, it won’t lose signal strength, and it doesn’t require batteries. Plus, it’s maintenance-free and lasts virtually forever.

RECCO technology was developed by Mahnus Granhed in conjunction with Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology, after he experienced a personal tragedy involving an avalanche in the 1970s. The first detector and reflector were successfully demonstrated in 1983, and since then, RECCO has been adopted widely as a key tool for avalanche rescue. Remember, though, that while RECCO technology adds a layer of safety, it’s just one part of the overall strategy to mitigate risks associated with outdoor activities.
